Engineering Excellence in the AI Era: Maximizing Output and Well-being

The integration of AI into our workflows, through tools like Cursor, Claude Code, and GitHub Copilot, has enabled our development lifecycle to move faster than ever. We’re seeing a significant increase in code generation, and on the surface, this looks like pure progress. In practice, that speed shows up in very concrete ways. Juan Agudelo, one of our engineers, shared, “AI has helped me generate large datasets for testing, sometimes requesting more than 30 or 40 JSON datasets at once, and automate the rapid deployment of new test cases.” But as we discussed in a recent team conversation, speed without control starts to create friction.
To maintain our competitive edge without compromising our quality of life, we must evolve how we work. Juan added that maintaining well-being requires intentionally stepping away from the screen by reading, going to the gym, or playing sports. This balance becomes critical in an environment where work can easily extend beyond boundaries. That’s why we focus on three core pillars: value over volume, energy management to hit your milestones, and the evolving role of engineers.
Value Over Volume
AI makes it easy to generate more code, but more code doesn’t always mean more value. The principal goal is impact: solving business problems faster and better. The most effective engineers are the ones using AI to remove repetitive tasks and focus on:
- Designing better systems
- Solving complex problems
- Making thoughtful decisions
Writing code faster doesn’t make the work smaller; it makes it heavier in a different way. There’s more to check, more edge cases to think through, and more responsibility to get it right. If AI speeds things up, that extra time needs to go into making sure the code actually holds up.
Energy Management to Hit Your Milestones
Deadlines are a reality of our industry. The key to high performance isn't pushing through exhaustion, but managing your energy over time. When work accelerates, the instinct is to keep going, but you need to recognize when to step away before it impacts your performance. Sometimes that looks like:
- Stepping away for a few minutes
- Switching to a lighter task
- Taking a short walk to reset
These aren’t breaks from productivity; they are part of it. Managing your energy is what allows you to maintain quality, make better decisions, and deliver consistently, especially as the demands of the role continue to evolve.
The Role of Engineers Is Changing
AI isn’t replacing engineers, but it is changing what a great one looks like. Today, being a strong developer isn’t just about writing code; it is about guiding it. AI can generate solutions, but it does not understand context or long-term impact. That responsibility still belongs to the engineer. The role is changing towards:
- Continuous Improvement: Use the efficiency AI tools provide to strengthen your skills in system design, security, and ethical AI implementation. The sharper your technical judgment, the more effective your AI prompts become, achieving superior results in less time.
- Proactivity and Ownership: The AI proposes, but you own the final result. Maintaining a high standard of ownership over every line delivered is what sets us apart and ensures long-term success.
In this new environment, judgment becomes more valuable than speed. Even though AI can propose solutions, engineers are still accountable for what gets shipped.
What are we doing at Ballast Lane Applications?
At Ballast Lane Applications, we recognize that productivity should not come at the expense of well-being. Monica Echeverri, Chief People Officer, explains it:
“We believe the future of work isn't about choosing between performance and humanity, but about integrating them. Our BLA culture is built upon three fundamental pillars: holistic well-being, professional growth, and a healthy work environment. We operate under a clear conviction: productivity cannot come at the expense of our people. That’s why we built an environment where mental health is a priority.”
Currently, we are partnered with Selia, a leading mental health platform that connects individuals with over 500 certified psychologists who understand their culture, context, and language. Selia makes therapy accessible and free, offering online sessions, personalized matching with specialists, and tools to support emotional well-being. It’s designed to make mental health care as easy and human as it should be, and it is available for all our team members.
As AI continues to reshape how we work, we’re exploring how to support our teams, from reinforcing healthy work habits to expanding programs that address the unique pressures coming with faster, more demanding workflows.
Efficiency with Purpose
AI is like an engine: it makes teams faster and more capable, but your well-being is the fuel. When managed well, speed is an advantage; unmanaged, it creates pressure. Success isn't about pure speed; it's about sustaining performance and making AI-driven pace work for us, not against us.
