Recruiting at Ballast Lane Applications is central to our ability to meet market demands and deliver exceptional service, making it one of our most important functions. To build the best software and tools, you need the best human talent.
Our hiring process attracts and pre-validates top-tier technical talent with AI proficiency. But technical skills are only part of the equation. We also seek people who live our core values: Ownership, Honesty, Teamwork, and Continuous Learning. These traits are difficult to assess through resumes and traditional interviews.
Over the years, we’ve reviewed thousands of applications and successfully brought hundreds of people onto our team. Along the way, we realized we were sitting on a substantial amount of data we could use to our advantage.
We asked ourselves a simple question: Could we use AI to objectively help us find these traits, rather than matching keywords on a resume?
This led us to believe that AI could be the key to consistently and objectively identifying these values-driven traits, rather than relying on simple keyword matching. To find out, we decided to build our own solution. Here is the story of how we created VerifAI, and how it’s changing the way we build our software development teams.
The Gaps in Traditional Assessment
Resumes are messy, and key patterns like job tenure, career growth, or employment gaps are buried and hard to spot, especially as the candidate pool grows.
We saw this as a perfect opportunity to practice what we preach. We used the exact same agile product development process we use for our clients. We used our own AI coding tools to rapidly build a prototype, sent it to our recruiting team, and immediately started gathering feedback.
Building VerifAI lets us test our own workflows while solving a real, internal problem.
VerifAI: Shifting Focus to Risk Assessment
While VerifAI includes the traditional candidate matching, that’s not actually its main job. Instead, we designed it to look at candidate risk and stability based on their historical work patterns.
When a resume is uploaded, the system extracts and structures the key information, such as work history, timelines, roles, and background details. From there, a scoring engine evaluates patterns such as:
- Job Stability: How long did the candidate stay at each position?
- Employment Gaps: Are there unexplained breaks between roles?
- Overlapping Positions: Was the candidate working multiple full-time roles at once?
- Career Growth: Does their history show a logical progression of responsibility?
Instead of relying on a recruiter's subjective "gut feeling" during a quick scan, the system looks at every applicant the same way. The result is a clean, structured risk profile that helps our team see the full picture instantly. This consistent evaluation sets VerifAI apart.
The Strategic Impact: Consistency, Efficiency, and Transparency
The challenge for recruiting teams is not just identifying qualified candidates; it’s identifying potential red flags and risks early, before significant time is invested in interviews and evaluations.
Traditionally, this kind of deep resume analysis occurs informally and varies depending on the recruiter's experience. VerifAI brings structure and fairness to the initial screen.
By standardizing how candidate history is evaluated, recruitment teams gain these three advantages:
- Consistency in early-stage assessment
- Efficiency by reducing manual review time
- Transparency into how risk signals are identified
This allows recruiters to focus more on engaging with the ideal candidates.
The VerifAI Engine: AI for Structure, Logic for Explainability
We were very intentional about how we built the technology behind VerifAI. The system uses AI where it adds the most value: turning unstructured resumes into structured data. But when it comes to actually scoring that data, we use a fixed, logical engine.
We chose this hybrid approach for a reason. AI is fantastic at handling the infinite ways people format documents, but the actual logic used to evaluate a candidate must remain perfectly consistent and explainable. The exact same resume will always produce the exact same score.
Augmenting Human Judgment, Not Replacing It
To be absolutely clear: VerifAI does not replace our recruiters, and it doesn't make hiring decisions.
What it does is give our team a better starting point. By introducing a clear, objective review up front, we can move faster and make better decisions. Over time, this keeps our whole hiring process clean and ensures we spend our time with the people who truly align with our values and our clients' needs.
Building Better Hiring Systems
At Ballast Lane Applications, we treat our internal tools with the same respect we treat our client products. VerifAI is a perfect reflection of that mindset. It’s not about fully automating resume reviews. It’s about using the time we save to make better, more human decisions. As AI technology continues to evolve, VerifAI will too, serving as our blueprint for how smart data can solve mission-critical challenges.
